Threaded Mode | Linear Mode

I've been lurking here for a while without dropping a line, and I wanted to specifically ask you guys about what kind of bass I should purchase.

My needs are to be standardized, I don't want a specialized guitar. So I want to know, what is the middle of the line bass for "standard" use? I'm willing to drop down a few hundred for it, so I want a mid to high end one so I assume I'm relegated to Ibanez and Fender? But again, I'm completely new to this so hit me with what you guys know.

You can get a "standard" fender jazz or precision bass for a little over 400. They're also offering a nice Fender bass with active electronics for 500-600. I forget the exact prices.

I can get a much cheaper bass (around $200).

second hand bass guitars are better cos the woods harder it gives a better sound
