I started by playing absolutely every piece of music I heard on the radio. That will only take you so far. I have taken lessons for a couple years to learn to read music. I also got a nice thick theory book to learn. It is very dry, but the book is helpful. Lots of scales and wonderful changes to add to my arsenal. I suggest it highly.

Playing scales is pretty pointless if you don't play music. I did things a little differently. I did the songs first and the scales second. You don't need to know a whole bunch to be good, you just need to play more complicated stuff. Playing scales won't make you better, you should understand them, but playing more challenging music all the time will make you better. That's the reason you started guitar right? To play your favorite songs? Then somewhere along the line you were told you had to play scales and argpeggios. It helps if you understand them, though.

As for sites, this is a good site for guitarists, but I would go out and get the book "Total Guitar." It works really well, and I completely tought myself how to play with it.

If you know what scales are appropriate in a certain key, you can improvise a hell of a lot better. Theory is a must if you want to be as versitile as possible.

That's what I said. Music theory is really important, but it doesn't help you really become a better player. You can understand music theory all you want and still suck because when you try to improvise you can't play. I'm not trying to be contradictory, I was just saying that scales shouldn't be your life. Oh well, I'm someone who understands music theory thoroughly, so maybe that wasn't the best advice.
