I'd like to begin to learn the guitar but I have no idea where to start. First of all would it be better to get a cheap guitar to learn on or should I dive straight in and get some professional equipment? Also, how long did it take people to teach themselves without proper lessons? I know what i'm like and i'll probably get disheartend if I can't play the first time I pick up so I'd like to know what other peoples experiences are.

Cheers, Matt

I would recommend getting a Standard Mexi Strat. Those are perfect beginner guitars (that's what I started on 7 years ago). And then in time you can slowly build up your equipment. And without proper lessons...it could take a while. It just depends on how musically inclined you are. It helps if you play another instrument.

I would recommend that you start off with an acoustic. If you're just beginning, you'll be working on basic chords anyhow and the acoustic will give you a bit more space to work with as far as the fretboard goes and is more forgiving.

I whole heartedly second that. An acoustic, as well as being a much better instrument for solo play, is cheaper and sets you up better as a guitarist (also, there's nothing worse for your neighbours than hearing an amped up Strat played by a beginner) . Lessons are not necessary, though I wish I had taken some. You could try a few, to see how that goes.

I started off on an epiphone les paul. I think electric guitars are easier to play. But if you go from electric to acoustic, you'll have trouble doing chords because it's harder. Acoustics are so much bigger when it comes to do doing chords. :;):

mikel gilmour? who is that?

anyway, i started acoustic and have been playing for about 6 months. I finished with my chord book a while ago and need to learn the notes. Can anyone recommend a good book that teaches the notes?

I suggest Mel Bay's Complete BOok of Guitar Chords, Scales, and Arpeggios. You can start memorizing scales, which is a must for improv.
