a tip -

if you want a really interesting sound and you have an effects pedal and an amp with built in effects you can do this. put high delay on the amp and the pedal with lots of gain throught the pedal. now turn the gain on the amp on and play... its kinda weird, not a very good sound but interesting.

it sounds even weirder with a wah wah pedal too.

tip:

Those of you who have a bone or plastic nut and find that due to string bending your guitar strings are snagging and going sharp, this can be fixed.

Lift the guitar string out of the nut and with your fingernail trace the string path back and forth in the nut slot. You should be able to feel a burr or rough spot. Take a small piece of very fine sandpaper (400-600 grit) and fold it in half. Now lightly run the sandpaper back and forth in the nut slot to remove the burr then place a tiny drop of light machine oil in the slot and replace the guitar string. If you do not have any oil you could use pencil lead (graphite).

more old tips:

Here are some steps you can take to maximize the life of your strings:

Before playing, apply a dime-size drop of sanitizer and rub your hands together briskly. The sanitizer will not only kill whatever bacteria are hiding out in your palms but will also evaporate harmful oils which will dull strings. (You can buy a bottle of hand sanitizer in your local drug store). I recommend using this method over washing hands in soap and water because this tends to soften both the left hand calluses and right hand fingernails, two possible deleterious side effects.

When you're through playing, wipe the strings with a dry dish towel or a cotton diaper. These make great polishing cloths as well. You may also want to try one of the commercially available products to clean and maintain your strings.
"Fast Fret" glide-on string lubricants also protect the strings from corrosion.

old tip:

When you change your strings, put the old strings in the bags the new strings came in and date the outside. Now put it in your guitar case. This not only gives you emergency replacement strings but reminds you down the road the last time you changed them.

cleaning tip:

I have gold plated tuners on some of my guitars. I found something to use to safely polish these so the plating won't come off. A product that I like very much called Virtuoso Cleaner. This stuff works great. I learned about it from a shop that uses it on very expensive antique guitars. Use this with a very soft cloth. Any other type of cleaner may rub the gold off.
