It's true that David's sound comes mostly from the effects and his playing style. But, without the emg's he couldn't get it, because of the shorter sustain on standard strat p'ups. Take sorrow for instance. With standard/non-active p'ups you have to crank the volume to the limit and maybe put alot of overdrive and distortion in. With the emg's it doesn't take that much to get the right sound.
At least that's what I have found. I've got a big setup like David. Not all the same stuff, but I'm able to get a sound like his.

i can get sorrow more closer with fender noisless than i can with my emgs and the voulme is only on half

the sustain i would say doesnt mater aslong as u set ur compression and reverb right

overeall i wouldnt recoomend emgs but thats just my poinion but i have heard alot of people say they dont make a diffrence
the only reason david got them fittied in was because in the early 1980s during the anbout face tour he experiance feedback problems because the sound and lighting rig wqas on the same circuit and he found out he could control the feedback and cut it out with the emgs the reason he is using blackie his black strat is because the lighting and sound are on two sperate circuits thats his reason for emgs

thats from guitar world interview this year

I can get the sorrow sound with non-active p'ups too. But, as you say, you got to set the compression and reverb right and I don't want to do that sort of things when I'm playing, so I have different guitars for different songs.
In the end it's all about taste and your own experience. I don't always like the emg's too, but that depends on the song.

i think they're in his red strat. i have them, and i really love them. you do miss that certain twang sometimes though, but if you turn down the tone knobs all the way that is supposed to be what the regular strat pickups sound like (or so was told to me by the guy who installed them.)

they're pricey, i paid 220 plus 30 bucks installation, but i think the sound is amazing. i have a ****** 15 watt amp and the emgs rock it for all it's worth
