I have a guitar class in school, and we get like a week to practice the most god-awful easy worksheets. So I need something else to occupy my time and help me learn at a faster pace. I'm thinking learning the chords are the best place to start, right?? Is there a better place to start? If this is indeed the best place in learning guitar, can somebody post a nice chart of the most important guitar chords and/or maybe some beginners guide to learning guitar?

Thanks Cool

well, i reckon www.Guitar.om is a fair place to start, with many resources for players of any level. www.Hitsquad.com also have a lot of freeware you can download in their guitar section. it's trial and error, but i've found some good programs there, as for all other musical needs, like drum machines and stuff

get a teacher
yes, learn chords
also learn theory as it is very important
learn scales because they are very useful for understanding chord progressions and solos,(most imortantly the major scale and if your playing rock the pentatonic/blues scale all five positions but the most common is the 1st position known as the minor pentatonic) also learn how the different chord variations are constructed- this is all part of theory
practice alot, especially specific techniques/riffs you have trouble with and do finger exercises
learn to read music, although that is not nearly as important as the above ( i'm terrible at reading music but i get by with TABs )
This is only if your serious about guitar though. If you just want to learn a couple of riffs to strum, learn the chords and just use tabs.

Also a great guitar website with a good forum is http://www.cyberfret.com :D Cool :Oo: :blues:  rocker :music: rocker

Listen to loads of guitar records very attentively - you can learn so much by ear alone about how to play if you have the gift.

Watch some concert videos, sometimes a nice close up on the guitar solo can show you how the pros use certain techniques. I think David Gilmour in Concert has a special feature so you can just watch his fingers on a few songs. That might help. If he's a world renowned guitarist, he's got to be doing something right!

Which guitar is recommended to start with?

I started with a classical guitar. It was cheap as hell and worked.

In my opinion you don't have to learn to read music but you have to understand how things work together in order to properly play and improvise. Get a theory book, a scale book, and a chord book. Go with it.

Listen to tons of players and immitate their licks. Let your brain absorb as much guitar as possible, and you will be amazed when you are playing and all of a sudden a Hendrix lick jumps out.

Thank you so much both.
I am listening too much guitar, hope it will help. So I decided to start with acoustic, that seems "easier" to me too.

Is theory so important?
