Okay, my friend wants a bass guitar. There are two options. A rogue bass that is high quality for only $80, or this pack he keeps tellin' me about. (I don't know what brand.) This pack costs $150.
I want him to get a Fender Precision Bass. It's 600 bucks, but I want him to get it. Does anyone own it? If so, can you give me some information about it? Also, are there better basses for cheaper that you'd recomend?

for what its worth...................
I have 3 basses on my 'must have' list
1) Fender Precision Bass
2) Fender Jazz Bass
3) Thunderbird IV Bass
I have played Stings "Sig" Fender Precision Bass and would
add it to this list. I think they only cost around +/-$600.
If money was not an issue I'd grab the Nikki Sixx "Blackbird".

I know. But he doesn't have that kind of money. (Everyone's poor in our town.) I'm just trying to convince him to save... so far he can only afford the $150 one, but yes, the precision bass is a must-have.

I'm getting sick of guitar snobs who sneer at some poor guy who can only afford a <$200 dollar guitar. If he's learning bass, what is the point of spending so much? W

I don't understand why mentioning guitars that are in a higher price category invokes such ire.
If I were just starting out I would want all the info available.
Let me give an example....if you were starting out and bought a strat pack you would spend about $240 and get a small amp and guitar, it would last you about a year. After that, you would begin to desire an upgrade of a $350-$600 guitar. My thinking is that you could have applied that earlier $240 to this.
Now it may seem snobish to some but assuming you can play fairly well and know some of the licks from your fav-guitar-player....I think it is wise to go the next step. For about $1300-$1800 you can get a tone upgrade. In fact, this is the entry point for getting that 'tone you desire.
If I was at this level of playing or better I would not want to be thinking about low-balling the budget and only spending in the $600 range. For the same reason as I wouldn't want to select the strat-pack. That $600 gets you half way there and would/could be money profitably used. In a few years the cheaper guitar will work but it won't resell. And that's the rub!!!!
A guitar in the higher range will hold its value and you'll get your money back if you upgrade it or just sell it.
The $600 you spent on the lessor one will depreciate or be lost.
So, net-net, it's not about being a snob.
It's about not wanting to see people lose their money.
It's a public service, if you will, but no thanks are required.

Yeah but what if he buys a 600$ whatever bass or guitar, then realizes he doesnt have the time for it, doesnt like it or it just isnt the instrument for him, thats alot of money wasted when you could have got a cheap one.

[but what if he buys a 600$ whatever bass or guitar, then realizes he doesnt have the time for it]
Let me try and be more succinct.
I would not spend $600 on a possible whim.
I would spend that much if the person in question typically exhibits artistic ability and an attention for detail.
I wouldn't spend $300 on an impulsive and unpredictable person. I'd spend the $200 on a six year old's intro strat.
If the $200 strat is wasted and the guitar is junked, I would take it outside, beat it on the pavement, run over it with a car,
shoot it, sign Pete Townsends name on it and hang it on the wall. $200 bucks for artwork is cheap too....but it would be good for a laugh.
