Hey there,
I don't currently own a compressor, tried out two though, the Marshall and the Boss compressors (the standard cheapest ones in the ranges i think)..I found both kinda wrecked the sound to be honest, everyhing sounded really spongey and undynamic (I guess dynamics are one thing that is supposed to eb changed). However, Ive got a Boss OD-3, yeah, is and overdrive, but setting the drive/gain pretty low, and bringing the volume up to unison gives me an awesome compressor effect, works great with the volume knob, keeps everyhing very clear, but brings up the weaker notes. I also find, that this unison setting doesnt change the overall sound/gain, but does bring all the harmonics to life, litterally pinched harmonics scream out with little effort when i want them.

Just my 2pence worth..try an overdrive set low instead of a compressor, the result can be quite pleasant.

Cheers

with the gain down low your bassically only using it for a pwer boost not a compressor compression isnt neccesary on overdriven tones eq is the only way it would work dave only uses compressors on his clean tones like the cs 2 he used for years until he switch to the dynacomp on his latest tour he only used that on the blue and on shine on and wearing the inside out wasnt really needed althyough it does sound better with his boosted mids on candy red emg strat

Makes your tone a little crunchier and makes your sustain a little longer.

My fuzz pedal, a Z.Vex Fuzz Factory, has a compression dial so I needn't worry about compression. :;):

doesnt really do that much to be honest ur tone will get crunchier but it also depends on what amp you have if you boost it really high with the channel volume and then the master volume that can crunch your tone and give u full sustain its not neccesarily a compresssor that you need
a compressors bassically just make ur tone more phattt sounding even with a chours you can do the same effect if you have the rate down really low
