I was wondering if any of you can read music. If you can, how often do use the "skill" and is it really usefull? Im just learning it, I find it interesting but yet a pain . I can play music, I just have that feeling that I don't fully know music, know what I mean? I like the would like to learn the aspect, instead of just looking at tabs or chords or scales.
thanks

I can, but haven't even looked at a piece of sheetmusic for ....probably,,... 10 years. Just don't find any need, as I don't play other peoples music unless it just sorta comes to mind and outta my fingers.

Yeah thats probably the easiest. I do know a lot about reading music because I played trumpet for 5 years, but I haven't applied much of it to guitar.

I can read music for bass and treble clef. I took lessons after years of playing by ear and reading tab. I don't consider it a total waste of time to read music, because I can play christmas tunes out of the book...with full distortion of course, but I don't use it playing originals or covers.

I guess it kinda helped with my theory studies too.

I started to when I first started to play guitar but I lost interest in it. I have learned a lot about theory like notes, scales, etc.

I read music for trombone, but I haven't graduated past tabs on guitar yet, and I play keyboard/piano by ear. I don't think you need to know how to read music to be a good musician but it helps with understanding the theory. If you understand your instrument well enough and have a good enough "feel" for music, I think you can still be a "real" musician. David Gilmour didn't even know how to read music until recent years and no one would argue he's a masterful musician, right? :D
