I have listened to very large amount of operas, and I must say that Roger's stuff is actually very good.Maybe the main flaw is that 21th century is not proper time for composing operas, but musically, his opera is good.Very good!

Seamus the Dog Wrote:Asking people with no, or limited, music education to listen to a symphony or opera and expecting them to comprehend what they are hearing is similar to handing them a book written in Croation and asking them an hour later how they liked the story. At best, they will have recognized the occasional word.
Good comparison, I look forward to when I can afford to get this and expand my own musical horizons.

Part of the problem is, yes, that people these days aren't exposed/educated to certain kinds of music, and thus can't appreciate it. But, my problem is just that I don't like opera. I mean, I grew up with a father who listened to classical music and an aunt who blasted opera constantly, and I ended up liking one and disliking the other. Maybe it was that my aunt insisted on trying to sing along to it!
But, actually, what I've heard of Ca Ira (my brother e-mailed me some tracks--it costs a literal arm and leg here in Japan) sounds quite nice for opera, so I don't have a bad attitude about it. It definitely took guts for Roger to do. But, I do have another problem with it... it's not really a problem per se, but while I think I can enjoy this music, I somehow can't think of it as a Roger Waters album. That, of course, in no way reduces the quality of the album, but I am still awaiting the long-overdue follow-up to Amused to Death!

its not just being exposed its just some people actually dont like it maybe? Not everyone is a road scholar like you apparently. ill stick to floyd and their solo work excluding Ca Ira.

Actually, I have an aunt in her early 50's with severe mental disabilities. She cannot talk, but loves music. Opera is one of her favorites (this is not the one who turned me off of opera by playing it too much, but her younger sister!) She (my aunt w/mental disabilities) tends to like dramatic music... heavy metal, opera, tropical music, and weird, fast Asian folk music are some of her favorites. She probably wouldn't like Floyd much at all except for maybe something like "Ummagumma." Anyway, SHE appreciates opera a lot, and she obviously hasn't studied it at all.
It's all just a matter of personal taste. I like classical music, merengue, Okinawan folk music, swing jazz, hardcore punk, electronic music, bluegrass, and Tuvan throat music, to name a few, but I don't like opera. I know that it is a good and worthy art form, but it just isn't my cup of tea.

Maybe I'm a philistine but I hate the sound of opera, I'd be interested in what connoseurs think of the album though, and Roger is as entitled to create this as anyone else, some of the 'pop' music he has been involved in is as profound, emotionally, as what some of these classical music toffs have done.

In the past I wouldnt have given this, or any classical music a chance.....But, what Ive heard of Ca Ira is so powerful! Im getting this soon ...The emotion (imho) of this album is very similar to Rogers other stuff, even if the delivery isnt.
