In Canada, when anyone gives a live performance, they have to pay a 'royalty' to SOCAN, which is the organization that collects said royalty and distrubutes it to the orginal music 'owner'. Like, when we do a Pink Floyd Tribute concert, we remit 3% of net ticket sales to SOCAN.

What is the organization called in the U.S.? And are their similar setups in the rest of the world?

Thanks :)

The performing rights societies in the US are called BMI and ASCAP. They collect the license fees from the venues that host the music. The bands pay nothing.

Thanks very much Dan :)

Up here, either the venue remits it (deducting it from the final settlement) or the band remits it itself. Very confusing. Either way, the band pays it. :Oo:

Ya know what...
If it was the law that my PF tribute needed to either carry an annual subscription to play shows or pay a small percentage to David and the boys each time we played a show I would have absolutely no problem with that at all...
