Watching "King of the Hill," Hank always says propane is "God's Gas." Pretty handy stuff, really - not just for cooking. But, for BBQ, I really DO like the gourmet-style charred wood that doesn't need the JP4 to get it going.

I suppose it depends on what I'm cooking, too. Ever had beef or pork cooked on cherry wood? A REALLY HOT fire, searing the meat on the outside but leaving the juices in - simply SCRUMPTIOUS.

OMG - did I really USE that word, SCRUMPTIOUS? Just to be on the safe side, I better stay out of the fabric stores and not watch any of those home interior decorating shows on TLC for at least a week...

For cooking, charcoal.

For self-imolation, neither. Go with white gas.

Propane man....I have neither the time, nor attention span, for cooking with charcoal.
Cool

Of course, if someone else is doing the cooking, I'd prefer Charcoal :D

All of the great chef's go with charcoal/wood when cooking BBQ. None use propane.

I have always used charcoal/wood chips myself and don't know a thing about gas-grilling.

I've used both. Propane is "backyard microwaving" - it's really easy, but there's no skill or art involved. I'd rather BURN a lot of burgers on charcoal learning to master it than whip out propane and get it sterile-perfect every time.

If you're good with the wood, "stick" with it (no pun intended, but it was too cheap to resist). Most people don't have the patience or skill to master it.

TOTALLY agreed. But I will say... I'll eat "Top Fuel" steaks, even though I prefer WOOD FIRE to anything else.
