Somewhere out there is a bunch of teenagers with nothing but time on their hands being led by a talented visionary truly committed to doing something completely original and innovative. Whether we'll ever hear from them is another thing entirely.

this is bang on... mainstream music is utterly horrible, and has been for a while... there are probobly very good bands out there, trying to break through into the stagnant, image-based music industry... of course, i've never actually seen EVIDENCE of this... but then again, i haven't looked very hard... or at all..
exactly, there is good music around but you need to dig for it because the radio and tv are just playing the same NEW!!!crap, to be honest music has got like how it was before nirvana, STALE!!!!!!!

the truth is, there has always been this influx of mainstream, scuzzy, crappy teeny bop type music...through all the eras, even the 60s/70s. however, it has become especially difficult to get away from it these days. but look hard, and there are some good bands around these days. would i like to list:

Kaiser Cheifs
Nightwish
Kasabian
Snow Patrol....etc...etc...

They are starting to get a it mainstream, but it doesnt matter, really. Some faily decent bands. I like the Kaiser Chiefs. Snow Patrol are good from what I heard at Live 8. Nightwish isn't quite my taste, but I can see why someone would like them.

I think a lot of the younger people on this board don't know what it was like listening to the full range of 1970s and 80s music.

The good stuff has survived, but it's not like everything was all Zeppelin and the Who. There was a ton of crap then, too, and for every Pink Floyd, we had to suffer through a Loverboy.

True, true. I bought the Kaiser Cheifs album, but it's been a while since I've listened to it, and it does sounf a bit poppy. Darker bands such as Nirvana, Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails are pretty good modern bands though. How about Oasis? Then there's punk: Social Distortion, B-52's...and uh...(cant remember any other names.) I mean, music has declined, but there's still SOMETHING out there...right?

There are loads of good to great modern bands/artists:

- Modest Mouse
- Arcade Fire
- The Music
- the White Stripes
- Kasabian
- Devendra Banhart
- Sufjan Stevens
- Coheed & Cambria
- the Charlatans
- the Eels
- Kings of Leon
- Franz Ferdinand
- the Doves
- Bright Eyes
- David Viner
- Dream Theater
- the Muse
- Arctic Monkey
- the Greenhornes

...and that's just a couple I can think of on the spot - different styles and all. Obviously not everybody will like every band on the list, but it's well worth to look around a bit. I mean, hell, these days it's so easy to find some samples or download a song or two and find out a bit more about a band.
