I had to vote college football but I really think aussy-football is more fun to watch. I have no idea of what they are doing and that adds to the fun. Especially if I am as lit as those guys on the field.

we are gonna beat you so much this season, yidoooooooo
Mmh...a fantasist, like most Spurs fans. Re the North London Derby, you might keep a Tottenham defeat down to about 3-0 (at Highbury), maybe 2-0 (at White Hart Lane), if you`re lucky.
I predict the usual mid-table under-achievement, with maybe a plucky little Cup run - (say, a 5th-Round demise?). Nothing to worry the "big boys", of course. :D
It would be churlish of me not to give credit where it`s due, though - 1961 was a good year. ???

Sorry Simps. You`re right, as always. I was being flippant more than anything. :)

simps Wrote:'Soccer', known simply as 'football' in proper footballing countries all over the world, gets my vote. But why isn't Rugby Football on the list? Or Gaelic Football, a less widespread variant. Rugby must surely be there. Is a worldwide sport compared to Australian or NFL.
Yeah, Rugby Football is by far the best. Gaelic Football is also great, but not a patch on Hurling. Gaelic Football and Hurling are among the oldest surviving sports in the world too, both having roots going back over 2000 years.

I HATE having to qualify the term by saying "SOCCER".
If you use the term "Soccer" in England, you reveal your ignorance straight away. The term means absolutely nothing.
Ignorance? Erm, the term comes from the true name of "soccer", which is Association Football. Rugby actually has rules closer to the variation of football played until the split of the governing body and subsequent joining of the London and Sheffield football associations under a common set of rules. When there were several competing forms, (including Rugby, Sheffield, London, the Eton wall game etc.), they were loosely governed by similar rules.
Rugby Football and other forms split over the rule of hacking, (at the opponents shins), where Rugby rules saw it as acceptable, others did not. Eventually others formed a unified set of rules and so Rugby Football is technically older and so could be argued to lay the claim to the name above all others.
Ironically enough, Rugby now bans hacking whereas the thugs that play in the Premiership seem to do it on a regular basis without penalty.

Nice one Scream!! I couldn`t have summed it up better :D
Being Irish, and the same age as me, I`m sure you remember the late 70`s, when there were no less than Seven Irish internationals in the side (N.I. & Eire).
Liam Brady...what a sweet left-foot! :)

I wasn`t qestioning the derivation of the word, Steve.
Just that the term "soccer" is never used as a qualifying word - it`s just "football".
