Yeah...I admit it.....I was a huge comic book buff as a kid. Used to read 'em, draw 'em, watch the cartoons. In fact, as an adult, I think being involved in that line of work could be rewarding, and I wish I'd kept it up as I got older, but then there's girls, beer, weed, rock and roll, and sports too.....so all that kind of fell by the wayside.
This particular character was originally conceived in the early 1940's, quite literally as a fictitional foe to Hitler, and as such, caught on quickly and went on to be a mainstay in Marvel's arsenal of popular heroes for decades. Now, they have him being taken out of the game by a sniper apparently. Are we ready for a world without Cap? Is it perhaps a hint at today's real life political climate?
Of course, this is comic book land here, so there's every reason to imagine that he'll be back....they killed Superman briefly, back in the early 90's, afterall. He didn't stay dead long, as we know......

Simple : Anything that's strictly pro American doesn't sell well over seas... That's why they dropped "For truth, justice and the American way" from the superman movie (Still didn't save it though)

America isn't anything to be proud of these days. We suck :(
And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone

No I would have to believe that the character is gone for good, barring some great need for a lift in national pride. Oh wait. That is what we really need more often these days given our current course in the world race.
You should not really compare Captain America with Superman either as Superman is really almost synonomous with the phrase "super hero" and scarce few of today's kids probably read or collect a Captain America book or know the character.
Now obviously, comic book characters have always been brought back or revived in ways for many reasons but I don't think this is a way of Marvel trying to reinvent or reinvigorate the Captain America titles.
Do they still do the "What If..." comic book specials? You know like when the book has the premise of what if the Red Skull had posessed the super soldier formula and created an army of "Kapitan Deutschland"? Or what if Reed Richards was the only member of FF not to be affected by the gamma rays?
I also was somewhat of a collector a few light years ago but have not even scanned the magazine racks for a comic in probably 10 years. I would have to think that today's kids are not much interested in these older, sort of historic characters if they read a comic at all. iTunes and iPods. MySpace and MyPSP. No interests in MyComic iBooks. Someone start a MyPoll.

Well with The Hulk and Ghost Rider as proof, the movie does not have to be a good one for someone to produce it. I am quite sure that Captain America always had more readers than Ghost Rider but perhaps someone thought the character would have made an interesting adaptation on film. I think Ghost Rider had been in the works for a long while and I had not heard of a Captain America movie until just now, if there is any fact to this.

Translated: Captain Amerca's agent decided it was finally time for our hero in tights to graduate to the big screen.

What are you worrying about? All comics characters get killed and they come back to life. How many times have the members of the X-Men have died. At least twice each one.
