The band Nirvana is consistently ranked as one of the greatest bands of all time. But, are they actually worthy of all the accolades? I remember when they first got popular, but I was not, by any means, a huge fan. I thought they were rude and scary. It's taken me a good 15 years, to finally get into them.
My vote in this poll is "Can't decide." I don't like how Kurt Cobain has been mythologized (is that a word? :D ). He was a human being, who had serious mental problems, not some god. So much of the Nirvana legend is because he died at such a young age, at the height of the band's popularity. But, what would have happened if he had lived? Would they really have gone on and done incredible things, or would they have fizzled out, like so many bands who have been popular for a brief period of time, have done? People thought grunge was going to last forever, but it ended up dying a slow death, like most other fads. What do you guys think? Don't get me wrong; I've come to realize that Nirvana was a very good band, but are they as great as "hip" people claim they are? Sometimes I get the feeling that people say Nirvana was great, just to make it seem like they're cool, and not because they actually dig the music.

Overrated. While I like them, I'm in total agreement with cevor.....in terms of grunge bands, I'm more of an AIC, SG and Pearl Jam enthusiast.
That said....one of my "to buy" cds is their unplugged performance....this one seems essential.

Extremely overrated, I always hated Nirvana and Kurt's awful voice. Never found his songs interesting...

I guess I'm kind of in the middle. I own "Unplugged" and "Nevermind", and I love them both. But I'm not a die-hard Nirvana fan, but I definately think they demand respect.

but what you've got means such a lot to me

Not overrated at all. One of my favorite bands of all time. Anybody who says Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, etc are better must be insane. All those bands are generic overproduced cash cows. As David Yow (of The Jesus Lizard, kids) once said - "I don't see any difference between Pearl Jam or Toto."
NIRVANA were fantastic. Quite possibly the hookiest band I've ever heard. I think they are largely unappreciated, most people just like a few songs and just kind of take the band for granted. "Nevermind" is an ESSENTIAL album. You do not have a music collection without it - period. One of the most important albums of all time. "Bleach" is better though.
They opened the door to so many bands for me though, and a lot of people. I bet you you most Dinosaur Jr, Meat Puppets, Melvins, Mudhoney, The Jesus Lizard and perhaps even Sonic Youth fans were drawn into them because of NIRVANA.

Well, call me insane then.
Personally, I much more enjoy music by some of the other bands you slanted.....especially AIC. I have 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero' in my collection, but in no way did they ever make me feel like they were absolutely necessary to complete my music catalog.
When it comes to musical tastes, it's all very much subjective anyway. At the current time, I'd really like to hear Nirvana's unplugged material, as I think it's as accurate a gauge as anything to a band's talent and songwriting ability......how well some of those songs translate back to their acoustic roots, by which they were likely first writen.
I already know what AIC can do in this area....and it's simply phenominal.....to my ears anyway, and I suspect many others feel the same way. And in terms of "hooks", who's going to top AIC's 'No Excuses'?
