Not exactly a convincing argument for vBulletin when your reference is a post about having problems converting from Ikonboard to vBulletin.

I've been looking into forum options in more depth. Found a comparison chart here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki....8PHP%29

Whew, no wonder vBulletin is "the best" - you have to pay good money to use it, and not just a one time fee but an ongoing license fee! Those who use it though say it's worth it and seem quite happy with it, so maybe PFOnline won't mind the expense. In case cheap/free needs to be a deciding factor, what would be some good options?

phpBB (being free with lots of modifications available) seems to be a favorite among many people, despite some (but not all) having problems with hacking (you really need to stay on top of updates, and an overly modified forum can pose problems with being able to apply updates). I've been seeing more and more favoritism towards Simple Machines Forum too, which happens to have an Ikonboard conversion tool. I'm not terribly familiar with most other types of forums, but these two seem to be among the top favorites lately in terms of free quality forums, plus they have Ikonboard conversion tools which means we can simply convert this forum to a new one rather than have to start from scratch.

I wonder why they think SMF is "sh*t." I've seen far more love for it than hate so far. If it does what we'd need and is more secure than phpBB, it seems like a great option to consider.

What exactly are you guys doing when you get the "Died" error? I haven't been getting this error at all. I'm wondering if it could have something to do with the massive topics with excessive pages of posts. The main problem with this forum's instability is that database is extremely huge. Maybe if we delete the largest topics and start them over (like we've had to do with the Notebook a few times already, since it's size was causing errors and strange forum behavior) that would ease up on the server load and hopefully get rid of this "Died" error.

The Notebook used to be the largest topic, which is why that is the only one that has been deleted and restarted once it got large, but since we keep starting it fresh, other popular topics have now become larger, so it may be time to start all of the large ones over from scratch.

Well you could use ProBoards (it's free) until you find a more permenant way of converting the Ikonboard to something else.

EDIT: Plus, you don't "have" to pay a license fee :;):

Probably best to just make one permanent move, rather than to use some other forum temporarily and then move again to something else.

Due to the high profile status of this site, it's probably best to avoid "fell off the back of a truck" options. :D

Does anyone know anything about MyBB? I haven't had the chance to look into this one yet but I've seen it mentioned quite a bit as a free forum that is similar to vBulletin.

After reading lots of comments about vBulletin on various forums, it does seem to be the #1 favorite by far for most sites, especially large professional sites. The only downside is it costs money to use, but everyone says it's well worth the price. I didn't know much about it before but the more I read about it, vBulletin does seem more and more like the ideal choice for PFO.

It seems the most often mentioned favored free forums are phpBB, SMF, and MyBB. Just depends what your needs are mostly. SMF seems to be emerging as a leader, but since it's fairly new it lacks the amount of mods/add-ons that phpBB has available, and apparently SMF forums haven't been spidered by the search engines yet (according to a comment someone else posted somewhere), however it should be eventually. I've also seen PunBB mentioned a few times but without any elaborate comments about it and I haven't looked into it in detail, so I really don't know much about that one.

I agree. The way this site is set up, it seems it would do well to be integrated with a CMS, not to mention be far easier to administer as a result. Using a CMS would also expand the options and flexibility for this site, thereby improving it and making it more interesting and useful. I'm not sure how exactly PFOnline has it set up now but it seems to be a lot more difficult/complicated than it needs to be, and a bit disconnected too. It used to work just fine but the more this site grew over time, the needs have also evolved.

I'm actually in the process of seeking out the perfect CMS/Forum combo for one of my own sites that I decided it's finally time to convert over to such a format. I used PostNuke/phpBB for another site, which was ideal for that particular site, but that is over the top complicated for this other site, which I've deliberately kept as simple as possible with plain old html pages so far. I looked into Mambo 2 years ago but didn't use it because it was far too simple for my needs at the time, but I think I'll take another look at it now for this other site where it may be appropriate to use, not to mention probably improved quite a bit these past 2 yrs.

MyBB's interface is similar to ProBoards....

vBulletin offer a free trial, y'know - so you can use the admin functions.

I just got another error when I tried to report a spam post:
