I messed around with a PunBB demo and I didn't think much of it. It's functional but it's very simple and not the kind of thing we need here.

I did see vBulletin had a free 24 hour demo (I'm already convinced it's a worthy option), but I'm more interested in looking for free forums at the moment. I'll wait to try vBulletin's demo when I have time to sit down and really play with it and make use of that 24 hr window, though it's more important for PFOnline to do that since he's the one that will decide which one he wants to implement.

The limited time I've spent on SMF so far, I really like it, but it was only as a user, not with admin stuff.

I've spent some time playing around with MyBB and SMF demo forums as both a user and admin. I have to say I love MyBB quite a bit, especially it's admin features. I'm likely going to end up using it on one of my own sites. If it were between those 2 for PFO, I would say MyBB hands down.

The downside of MyBB is that there doesn't appear to be a conversion tool from Ikonboard to MyBB; however, Ikonboard could be converted into phpBB and then into MyBB (hopefully that wouldn't cause too many errors along the way with all that converting).

I haven't had the chance to review vBulletin's 24 hour free demo yet, but lots of people are saying MyBB is basically like a free version of vBulletin so if I love MyBB this much, there's a good chance I'll love vBulletin as well.

In that case I'd go with MyBB - it looks vBulletin-ish, serves it's purpose, it's free and it isn't phpBB, which is a good allrounder - but do some research into how secure it is, one thing you don't want is member's personal details being stolen, one of the things vBulletin is good at is security, one of the reasons it's so popular.

I think a compromise is needed between good security and cost.

My SMF board is indexed by all the major search engines and gets good rankings. It even has a dynamically generated google sitemap file that tells google exactly how to index the site.

There is a very active SMF community which provides great support and loads of free templates that are easy to modify.

I also run a phpBB site, which is a pain to administer in comparison to SMF.

Aye, come to think of it, I could (at least) convert the main site into XHTML rather than the old HTML it's using now... I'm not taking a dig at the PFO site, it's just that web standards have moved on since PFO was built.

Would the board become any less "unstable" if all the really old threads were deleted? The ones from the dark ages that everyone has forgotten about?
And deleting the accounts of members who joined along time ago but never posted (or who havn't posted in a long time)?

There are over 3000 members who have never posted, some have been members since the board opened, so I seriously doubt they're ever going to post, and the added bonus of deleting these accounts would be freeing up some usernames.

As far as I can tell in the Admin CP, there doesn't appear to be a way to mass delete members, they'd have to be deleted one by one. I am NOT going to delete 3000 members one by one! LOL I don't think deleting anything would really help at this point. Spectre (who used to be Ikonboard staff) told us that the best thing we can do at this point is to lock this forum and start a new one with different software that is better capable of handling such a large load this site carries. The amount of material we would have to delete to get this forum back to a stable state (if that's even possible anymore) would be so massive we might as well delete the entire board and start fresh again. Honestly, we're pretty much stuck with how things are currently until PFOnline can find the time to get a new forum set up, which appears to be no time soon since we needed a new forum since at least 2 years ago and we're still waiting. :-/

This is a bit unrelated, but still related..do you know if InvisionFree has the same problem with too much capacity or not..I don't really know about that too much, and I run one, so I was wondering what the deal with that is?

Snake, history will never know what she did. No one will ever learn the truth. Her story... her debriefing... will endure only in your heart. Everything she did, she did for her country. She sacrificed her life and her honor for her native land. She was a real hero. She was a true patriot. ~ EVA re: The Boss (MGS3)

I have no idea. I don't like InvisionFree so I never used it. I didn't know Ikonboard had capacity issues until Spectre told us about it.
