That song would be "Murder", from 'About Face'. It specifically addressed his feelings on John Lennon's murder a few years earlier. All The Floyd were inspired by The Beatles, so this had to hit close to home for them....

Murder is an incredible song.

When About Face came out, I owned The Wall and the Final Cut, and was pretty familiar with DSotM, but I somehow thought that Roger Waters sang all PF songs. When I heard "Murder" on the radio, I thought "Here's a great Pink Floyd song." I was shocked when the DJ said that it was David Gilmour. I knew that David was the guitarist for PF, but I didn't know that he was one of the main singers as well.

Forgive me, I was in junior high-school at the time!

The song sounds like Floyd alot. Especially after the solo, when it gets funky. But the Bass Solo is my favourite, I play it everytime I get my hands on a fretless. Great lyrics too

I wish I could play a fretless. I'm an OK bass player, but I'm much more of a Roger Waters than a David Gilmour in terms of skill in playing instruments. I can make up cool parts, but can't do technical stuff.

As much as I love songs like "On an Island," "The Blue," "A Pocketful of Stones" and "There's No Way Out of Here," I think that Murder still has to be my favorite solo Gilmour song. I almost wish that Floyd had done it... in fact, I wish Dave would play it on his solo tour so we could hear it with Rick playing keys.

Murder is such a great song, I think our Ian does a very admirable job at both the fretless work and the vocal, it's one of the videos on our site..bringing in the solo work is one of the things that seperates CE from other tribs and we're very proud of that...of course, we're heavily influenced by The Beatles as well....so I guess it's a tributes cover of a tribute

And now the final solution can be applied.

Indeed, it's 'Murder' that is about Lennon, though to be honest I find it a poor song; all that 'knife/life' simpleton rhyming going on in the lyrics!

And anyway, Lennon wasn't stabbed!

Well, a Dave lyric is typically a bit awkward with the rhyming, but the emotional core of the song hits me hard. I still remember waking up on that morning in 1980--it was a dark winter morning, and my parents were listening to the radio and crying. The first few lines really capture the feeling of that time. It was really the end of something.

Anyway, "Murder" is the best song written about Lennon's death, in my opinion. Technically, it isn't to Lennon at all, but rather to his killer:

Some of them standing, some were waiting in line
As if there was something that they thought they might find
Taking some strength from the feelings that always were shared
And in the background, the eyes that just stared

What was it brought you out here in the dark
Was it your only way of making your mark
Did you get rid of all the voices in your head
Do you now miss them and the things that they said

On your own admission you raised up the knife
And you brought it down ending another man's life
When it was done you just threw down the blade
While the red blood spread wider like the anger you made

I don't want this anger burning in me
It's something from which it's so hard to be free
But none of the tears that we cry in sorrow or rage
Can make any difference, or turn back the page

Oh yeah, the knife part is clearly a figure of speech--not the best one that could have been used, I suppose, but the fact that Lennon was killed with a gun and not a knife has never dimished the emotional impact of the song for me.
