Obviously, Dave and Roger can't get along or compromise to save their lives. Coupla crabby old bastids. They'll never be able to collaborate with each other in the studio. Here's what they should do:

Give Rick Wright one year to make the best music he can come up with: everything--melodies, harmonies, chords, arrangements. The only person allowed to collaborate with him is Nick Mason, who can suggest anything he wants--drum beats, sound effects, you name it. All they've got to do is come up with something at least as good as Broken China musically. Should be an avant-garde direction--let's say Broken China meets Sysyphus. I think they'll be up for the task.

When Rick, with a little help from Nick, has taken it as far as he can go, bring in Roger. Roger gets to write lyrics and come up with a concept. He's very good at doing that, but Rick gets veto power over musical suggestions, not the other way around.

When they have music and lyrics, Roger gets to lay down some bass tracks. After that, he's booted out of the studio.

Then, it's Dave's turn. He has a mostly completed work to deal with, but he's going to be doing the lion's share of the singing, so he gets to mess with the melodies, and he's good at that. Any significant alternation of the singing melodies results in songwriting credits for Dave. He's also allowed to write riffs and gets credit for that Rick deems the contributions adequate--hopefully, he'll be generous.

When that's all done, Dave gets to lay down guitar parts.

After all that's done, it's time for singing. Lots of harmonies, boys. Everybody has to chip in, even Nick. Of course, much of it will be Dave and Rick, but we need a few cool Roger leads too. Roger and Dave aren't allowed in the studio at the same time--this has to be done separately.

When that's done, Roger and Dave get the boot again. Rick produces the finished results, Nick helps and gets a co-producer credit.

I bet it would be the best PF album ever made.

too farfeched, it would never happen, too much of a fuss when they already have good solo projects.

Well, I think your hypothesis is really great, mabewa. And, yeah...it probably would make for one hell of a Floyd record. Rick's control over things would insure things stayed on the esoteric side of the spectrum, which is a good thing.

I don't see this ever happening, but one can always wish!

To add....I especially like your suggestion of Rick having "veto-power" over Roger's suggestions. This could only mean trouble on probably many different levels, and I have to wonder just how tempted Rick would be to exact a little revenge for what he might have endured during "The Wall" sessions.....

Once again, mabewa, you've raised a very thought provoking topic here. :D

Well, it's obviously a fantasy, but who knows?

A couple things that intrigue me: Nick states that when Division Bell was being recorded, Rick would vote only for his own contributions, and that the whole thing was turning into a "Rick Wright magnum opus" until they tweaked the voting rules. Also, after they finished Division Bell, they were said to have another album's worth of more esoteric stuff that they once planned to finish and release. (seem to have given up on it now). I have a feeling that a lot of this material is the stuff that Rick wanted to dominate the record.

So, here's an alternative idea: dig up those tapes, and say to Roger--here we have a piece of music--if you want to write lyrics for it, you will be credited accordingly and allowed to add your singing and playing to it. Of course Roger might well reject the whole thing, but he might not.

Anyway, seems like that would be a relatively painless way of making a new Floyd album.
