I only meant that Syd's excessive drug use and thus his downfall was a shame. I just think he could have been so much more... it saddens me.

Read recently from a good source that the vast majority of schizophrenics are smokers, yet virtually no schizophrenic ever develops lung cancer, and of the dozen or so in the world who do, almost none of them die from it, they mostly have a very minor case that soon goes into remission no problem, apparently. Found this to be such a fascinating report. Can having a mental illness make one almost immune to some physical illnesses?
There is the old argument about whether the use of the "softer" illegal drugs (marijuana, mushrooms, acid and so on) causes schizophrenia or at least triggers it in people who were already naturally predisposed to it. Some seemed to suggest that if these drugs play a role in the development of schizophrenia in many cases, then could it be that they also protect cells against lung cancer. Sounds unbelievable. Could in theory be true, though.

I am sceptical. How could a psychological disorder prevent the onset of a physical disease? Given that schizophrenics make up a small proportion of the population, could this not simply be a coincidence - the result of having too small a sample?

Riiiight... I'll believe that when God gives us back John Ritter.

Interesting. You didn't formally introduce yourself huh? I started to do a thread about first posts, but thought better of it. I can't even remember what my first post was.

Yeah somebody taped it for me a while back and I've just seen it last week. And yep, it is like the newer Radiohead covers but they are very Dadaist, Duchamp springs to mind.
even the space in between has it's purpose

"Syd" Barrett, the madcap rock and roll monster and original Ziggy Stardust is dead, but Roger Barrett, reclusive artist lives on.
I missed out on ever seeing the guy and only know the legend but it seems like the whole "Syd" persona was soooooo psychedelic it would be hard to live like that for long without blowing a fuse or two. Plus as the band's "creative genius", he was under a lot of pressure to keep on churning out the hits. His last two attempts "scream your last scream" and "vegetable man" were just too weird for the record company people and were rejected as singles and if we factor in the fact that it was fashionable to take LSD for breakfast at the time, schizophrenia is probably a walk in the park by comparison.
Still, the man made some brilliant records, even after his breakdown. i sure wish I'd done as much in my life as he managed to cram into a couple of years!
