that guy drumming in the pulse tour.... - was he really necessary

i was reading nicks book and it said he was needed because he was a perccusionist and he had a 3ft high mounted kit and alot of the instruments required a 2 ft jump

Personally I like it, especially on Learning To Fly. It adds some energy to the tour, as does Guy Pratt... instead of having just a few 50-year-olds on stage. I mean, Dave, Rick and Nick, while they make incredibly good-sounding music, aren't really the most entertaining musicians to watch, are they?

That's why they have a ton of lasers, films, and props to look at. :D I imagine they needed the extra people to fill in live what they would normally record in layers in the studio that just isn't possible to accomplish live without extra musicians. Overall though I think they want us to focus on the music rather than them, one example being the nondescript outfits they wear on stage.
