When most of the "Uninformed" hear the name Syd Barrett, they immediately sieze upon all the Urban legend crap & even some of the Informed people do as well;ie journalists!!!. Personally, when I mention his name & someone comes back with an" Oh, the looney from Floyd" I GET PISSED!!, like they're making fun of a family member, but that's just me!! It was P.T.Barnum who originally said: "You'll never go broke under-estimating the intelligience of the human race" or words to that effect.... I truly believe this. (i.e. Dubbya as our president for 8 @#$%@! years?!?!?

You are so right about people thinking DSOTM is Floyd's 1st album. Even when I was your age(I'm 46 now!) I was kinda like that till I got a copy of "A Nice Pair" opened it up & was like "who's this guy?". I didn't like Piper at 1st but now I think it's the greatest album by any band,EVER!!!

That's a good lp, get that one & you kill two birds with one stone, I had to get the 8 track later. I wore that lp out, my cover's in three pieces, taped together with many kinds of tape over the ages. The last paragraph Syd sings on his swan song on ASOS is classic Syd.

Check out a book called "Pink Floyd & Philosophy". It uses Nietchze to talk about all the Floyd members, DSOTM & the 3 "versions" of Pink Floyd. A few of them say that not only did Syd know what was happening to him, but that was also his only out;he realised he wanted NO Part in fronting a band & He wasn't capable anyway. Interesting stuff once you understand the philosphical stuff & it's explained in laymen's terms. Different, to say the least.

Even if Syd had stayed well, I still think he would've left Floyd by 69-70. There were already problems between Waters & Barrett. You've heard how Waters feels about Psychedelic music & Barrett,being the only artist in the group would have liked to branch out. Remember, he wanted the group to add 2 sax players......& what was on DSOTM?!?! SAX PLAYING!!. A little ahead of his time & I personally feel that it would take years for Waters & Syd to be on the same page.
