Syd named the band too. Just thought I'd add that since everything else was already covered! And he and David where teenaged friends. Not that that's important or anything. Just was interesting to me since Dave replaced him and all.

This is one thing you'll find hotly debated around here. There are those who think that Syd's band was Floyd in their most adventurous and groundbreaking incarnation. Similarly there are many who believe that a Pink Floyd without Roger is like a day without Sunshine. Most like almost all of it and feel that regardless of the era; it's all Pink Floyd. You'll make your own judgements in time, of course. Just be prepared to defend the family jewels if you cross paths with the wrong Floydians. All in all, though, this is a peaceful place.

in_the_flesh Wrote:So pink floyd continued without both main members? Is there other stuff any good without rogers or barett? Thats like that crap with gettin the replacement singer for queen and still calling it queen. I hate that..... I don't think you can have someone so important as Roger waters gone and still have the same name. as one of you said Barett was only round for 2 albums, they got like 15...... come on ya can't have the same band without the driving artistic force.... I dunno this is just my oppinon feel free to say other wise... and don't take me wrong I still like Pink Floyd and I ain't puttin them down...... so ya tell me other wise.... Angry
Gilmour floyd was still Pink Floyd.
Just because Gilmour took it in a different direction (more focus on the music, not the lyrics), it's just a different flavor of Pink Floyd. I appreciate both eras.

Pink Floyd was not a one man band.

Yes, David Gilmour did definately take it in a more musical direction. Unfortunately, Dave is sometimes overshadowed by Syd and Roger (as are Nick and Rick...). I even read a review or something at amazon.ca which referred to post-Roger Floyd as "Pink Fraud". Needless to say, I felt like kicking this guy in the balls until he was fully incapable of having children.

In some ways, I find The Division Bell to be better than The Wall; Waters' conceptual work of genius. For me, when it comes right down to it, I fell in love with Pink Floyd over the music, not the lyrics. The lyrics, to me, are icing on a great prog-rock cake.

Ok so there's been like 3 or 4 differ fases of Pink Floyd? Ya this is awsome.... one of the few reasons I joined up with this site was to learn more about the group that I have come to really like.... Ya I dunno myself I started with Dark Side of the Moon, then the Wall and finally Animals I want to get more, just haven't had the time.... So I guess for me Roger Waters is where its at..... I'm still not familliar with all the other stuff, but I tend to like music from the 70's any way.... Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, stuff like that, some late 60's too is good, so I'm not to familiar with the later stuff except the wall, that was early 80's wasn't it?? well thats when the movei came out...... that was awsome!!!! the wall movie!!!!!! YA I've also heard good things bout the berlin concert, but haven't seen the DVD yet.
