This is interesting... and hard to talk about...
I don't think so. He needed to write a song for a writing session and basically just constructed one from what he was wearing. To me anyone who does that can be seen as either a genius or falling off the rails. Since the two are so close and the line between them is often blurred, it can be hard to tell. When the rest of the band saw the other warning signs, (not singing at gigs, playing long out of tune instrumentals), surely they realised that Syd needed help, but it can of course be very easy to say that in retrospect.

According to Tim Willis (the half life of Pink Floyd 's lost genius) the song might be also a sneer towards the other guys and the things people wanted him to do, but he hated. For instance:
"It's awfully considering to think of me here."
"And I'm great that you threw away my old shoes and brought me here instead dressed in red" A reference to Top of the pops
"And I'm wondering who could be writing this song." Probably because Syd was writing most of the songs then, but it could also mean that he was making clear that he knew very well what was going on with him. And that he might dislike that they were more talking ABOUT him in his presence than WITH him. On the other hand I also can understand some points of view of the other four guys which I read in many papers.

Possible, some of that would make sense. However the first line is it's awfully considerate of you to think of me here. Since it was one of the last songs he wrote with the band, many would see it more along the lines of his impending breakdown. I think what you said would make a great deal of sense, but I also think he is showing a certain amount of what was also shown in Vegetable Man.

When hearing jugband i do get the feeling of isolation from something. I dont know if its about the band/recording industry or mental health but its as syd says

"a song can have two meanings"

RE: Jugband Blues
Whatever the intentions of the lyrics, they certainly proved to be prophetic.
