I saw the notorious photo of Abby Road at 5th June 1975 and I must say it is very shocking to see. Fat, bald and even his eyebrows shaved (Syd Barrett archives -by pictures-). I can imagine their feelings. Fortunately there are other picures in 1982 at which he looks better. According to me there are periods in each life that people might do mad things, though Syds behaviour then was indeed very bizar. And according to me he wasn't aware at all of the impression he made at his former bandmates.

I have heard that in the early days of Pink Floyd that he just experimented alot with various drugs and one day he just got too far out of it.
I also heard that he was a part of the Echoes cd, with the whole band, is this true?

I don't think he is crazy or anything close to it. Growing up in
post WW2 Europe was very stressful to kids/people. It was bad for many years after. Events shape/govern our lives,we have no control over them. It could've been a delayed reaction, who knows...

I think scarlet eagle is right about it being schizophrenia that was accelerated due to drug use. I have read that people who are predisposed to schizophrenia (that will most likely develop it later in life) experience it much earlier if using LSD. I don't like how people blame insanity on drugs. Most people just don't realize that these people use them to cope with the harsh reality perceived in their minds.

Healthy people can get schitzophrenic symptoms from other drugs too. I've experienced them when I smoked some strong hash. Really bad things mentally... I have nothing against people who smoke but it's just not my thing.

What is good for someone might be really bad for someone else. I don't think drugs can cause schitzophrenia to anyone but if you're that type of person they might "push" you more to that direction.

Totally OT but... my brother is a professional bodybuilder and whenever there's a report of some bodybuilder's death or illness they always blame the steroids. The truth is, steroids are probably the least dangerous thing those guys take. It's just how the big public wants to see everything: "Drugs made him beat up his wife, kill the family pet gerbile and jump from the 12th floor window", "steroids caused Lyle Alzado's cancer." etc.

And you know... those make good stories for the tabloid magazines.

And remember... Michael Jackson didn't need drugs to become totally whacked. Fame and fortune isn't good for some people. Maybe that fact played a role in Syd's illness, too.
